This one was tucked quietly in the end of my very first blog post here. It pre-dated the idea that I’d actually build a Spotify playlist for My ADHD Playlist. It’s an absolute anthem for me so it’s time to shine a light on it.
Gunship are a UK synthwave band that my mate BadCircuit introduced me to roughly 6 years ago. I instantly fell in love with their sound. Their first album was wall-to-wall awesome, with 80s inspired synths and glorious nods to 80s classics like the original Terminator and scream-king John Carpenter (whose voice appear on the track Tech Noir.)
This song is taken from their second album, Dark All Day – a much darker, edgier release compared to their self titled album. When You Grow Up, Your Heart Dies is a brilliant counter-point to the rest of the album. It’s a shining beacon of hope. A reminder that when things are looking a bit grim there’s always a light at the end of the tunnel.
In February of 2018 when Gunship were recording the song they crowd-sourced content for it by asking their fans to provide audio clips of them speaking “something short and positive”. Wow, did the fans deliver! A powerful, wonderful collection of these appear and make up a large part of the last half of the song. In August 2018 the band once again crowd-sourced content and asked their fans to provide short clips of them re-creating moments from their favourite 80’s movies. This compilation became the hilarious and beautiful official music video.
I love this band. I love the way they include their small but dedicated fan base in their art. And I love this song sooooo so very much. An absolutely unbeatable, uplifting electro-ballad that gets me right in the feels. Every. Damn. Time.
